Presentations

This campaign is here to support you to communicate the climate and solutions message with coaching and practice, with sharing of research and slides, with marketing support, and with outreach and coordination of speaker activities.  Communicating Reality is about presentations, media engagement, and other approaches to building the public will to execute solutions.

The goal of this campaign is to substantially increase public education as to the status of the climate crisis and solutions by increasing the number of presentations given and developing tactics to educate untapped groups such as faith leaders, retirement associations, civic groups, schools etc.  Our strategy includes realism, optimism, and empowerment.

Strategy

Realism: facing the impacts of rising levels of green house gasses in our atmosphere honestly and courageously.

Optimism: promoting solutions for a better future, environmentally, economically, and life style.

Empowerment: offering action steps at the personal level and for collective action. The strategy seeks to be both responsive and pro-active by challenging politicized distortions as they arise and by speaking to common myths and fallacies commonly spread by those with financial and/or ideological interest in maintaining the use of fossil fuels.

Tactics

  • Recruit chapter member(s) to participate in this mission critical campaign.
  • Develop teams with interest/expertise/skills to address each community group and develop customized presentations/actions for each.
  • Offer members opportunities to practice presentations, share useful slides and info, and attend presentations in support of members.
  • Develop a database of custom slides and development of presenter’s notes for various presentation types, and track Chapter experts in areas such as faith outreach, agriculture, schools, etc.

  • Contribute to the chapter’s monthly newsletter and website with reviews of books, videos and Climate Reality events that are relevant to communicating reality through presentations and written communications.
  • Create and promote calls to action for Earth Day, 24 Hours of Reality, and as a response to disinformation campaigns appearing in the national news. Calls to action may also promote amplification of our voices by supporting good journalism, books, and programs on the environmental movement.

Support – Training, Resources, and Slides

In addition to getting trained by Climate Reality, there are a number of ways to extend your knowledge.

We are building a library of the websites and videos that can support you in keeping up-to-date on climate science, extreme weather events, and current climate issues.  Be sure to check out our resources page here!

We also support sharing presentation slides. Members put a lot of effort into creating slides that make their presentations more relevant to the audience and more current or local. Our legislative team frequently creates slides about legislative efforts.

When your goal is advancing environmental health, its a win to have someone else makes use of your slides to communicate ideas that you are passionate about.

MOOC - Massive Open Online Courses

According to mooc.org, these are free online courses available to anyone to enroll in and provide a flexible way to access quality educational experiences. Dr. John Cook, the team at SkepticalScience.com and a number of other Climate Scientists have put together a 6 week in-depth course titled:

Making Sense of Climate Science Denial

The course is in its 3rd year-long run going from May until Monday Dec 13, 2021. I am taking it for certification {comes with several requirements and a nominal charge} and am in week #4. The material is excellent – extensive and through yet easily digested.

As you’d expect from scientists (but not from pseudo scientist deniers), everything is well documented; each section is backed by a reference page to the relevant research. There are numerous expert interview videos;  a few of the more famous experts: Professor Naomi Oreskes, Professor Katherine Hayhoe,

Dr. Michael Mann, and Dr. Benjamin Santer.

A big bonus for anyone making presentations is permission to use the slides shown in the lectures under creative commons license and links to where they can be found. Yet the most important aspect of the course is that they clearly state denier myths and exposes the fallacies underlying them arming you to address all the challenges you might get while giving a presentation.
